Dr Matthew Cowan is a Consultant Gastroenterologist in Caterham, Surrey who specialises in diseases affecting the liver.
Dr Cowan’s clinical practice includes all aspects of gastroenterology including acid related disorders, functional gut disorders and inflammatory bowel disease. He has a particular interest in diseases affecting the liver including viral hepatitis, alcoholic- and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and rarer conditions such as autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliarycirrhosis and haemochromatosis.
Dr Cowan is a JAG-certified endoscopist who performs diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy.
Dr Cowan attended St George’s Hospital Medical School where he was top of his year in both pre clinical and clinical exams. His postgraduate training was undertaken in London including time spent at King’s College Hospital, Royal Free Hospital, St Mary’s Hospital and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School at Hammersmith Hospital.
Dr Cowan was awarded a PhD for work in developing novel methods of diagnosing liver fibrosis at London University. The research was funded by a personal Fellowship from the NIHR and won awards from organisations including the European Association for the Study of the Liver. This research led to the publication of several original papers and invitations to present at numerous national and international meetings.
