Academic Background

Dr Rajak graduated with honours at Cardiff Medical School in 2005. He underwent training in the University Hospital of Wales which included specialist training in osteoporosis, early inflammatory arthritis, biological therapies, connective tissue disease/lupus, soft tissue rheumatism, and psoriatic arthritis/ankylosing spondylitis. Before relocating to London, he became a consultant at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath, where he undertook training in musculoskeletal ultrasonography and specialist clinics in osteoporosis and metabolic Bone disorders. He has been awarded the Clinical Excellence Award in 2017 for developing the Osteoporosis service in Croydon and a Teaching Excellence Award in 2013 when he was Lead Clinical Tutor in Cardiff. He is currently the Clinical Lead for Osteoporosis and Bone Health and Rheumatology Musculoskeletal Ultrasound in the Croydon Health Service NHS Trust. With the former he has developed a multidisciplinary integrated bone health service with colleagues from multiple medical and surgical specialities. With the latter, he has formed a diagnostic and interventional service and also set up a regional network with other centres in standardizing scanning practice and training. Furthermore, he was the co-lead in the development of the Early Inflammatory Arthritis service with the chief objective being to diagnose and treat inflammatory arthritis early, to preserve joint health and prevent long term damage, as per national best practice. He has an extensive background in teaching, having been the Lead Clinical Tutor for Rheumatology at the University Hospital of Wales, and an Honorary Clinical Teacher at Cardiff University. He is currently the Course Director for Rheumatology for South Wales University which has involved writing the Diploma and Masters course material and examinations and tutoring. He regularly provides lectures, workshops and seminars to peers, GPs, health professionals and patients with a particular focus on promoting bone health and early management of arthritis. To expand his skills base, he completed a Masters in Medical Law at Cardiff law school. Using this training he became the Chair for the Medicines Management Committee and Medicines Safety Group at Croydon Health Services with the remit of promoting optimal prescribing practice, reviewing medicines policies and guidelines and ensuring access to NICE approved medications. His healthcare philosophy is to provide early diagnostics and prevention of rheumatic disorders, to respond to changes in health to achieve optimal and ‘tight control' of disease and promote better understanding through education to empower health professionals and patients alike.
